Application

Metanil yellow has been used for staining of leukocyte granules.[1] It is also used as a counterstain in microscopic sections.[2]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Metanil yellow is an azo dye.[3] It is used as a counterstain in PAS (periodic acid-Schiff)/iron-hematoxylin stained sections to increase contrast.[4] Metanil yellow changes its color from red at pH 1.2 to yellow at pH 2.3.[5]
