General description

Cerium(IV)oxide (CeO₂), also known as ceric oxide, ceria, or cerium dioxide, is an oxide of the rare-earth metal cerium. It appears as a white to yellow nanopowder with a particle size of less than 25 nm (BET), exhibiting high surface area and reactivity. It is used in various applications, including catalysis, electrochemical applications, and in glass and ceramics. CeO₂ is widely employed in catalytic converters for automotive applications, where it aids in the reduction of harmful emissions. Additionally, it is used in the production of advanced ceramics, glass polishing, and as a catalyst in various chemical reactions. Its unique properties also make it valuable in solid oxide fuel cells and as a UV filter in sunscreens.

Application

CeO₂nanopowder is utilized in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) due to its ionicconductivity and stability at high temperatures. It is also used in batteriesand supercapacitors to improve performance. Additionally, CeO₂ is used as a polishing powder in the glass andsemiconductor industries. Its fine particle size and hardness make it effectivefor achieving high surface finishes on optical components.

The additon of CeO₂ to CuO/TiO₂ increases specific surface area and inhibits sintering and pore size growth at high temperatures.
