General description

Copper oxides (Cu2O, CuO) are p-type semiconductor materials with small band gap energy. High physical and chemical stability of metal oxide nanoparticles renders them extremely useful in catalytic applications. The structures of the compounds are monoclinic. Nanoscaled copper oxide compounds can be prepared by thermal plasma technology. A study reports its antimicrobial properties.

Application

Toxicity of copper oxide nanoparticles was reported.[1] Cu2O has been used in coating Cu nanoparticles (Cu2O NPs). Copper oxide nanoparticles has been reported to be used as an anode material for lithium ion cells and as gas sensors on account of it high surface reactivity. Hollow Cu2O NPs has been used in the preparation of nucleosides and as a catalyst in azide-alkyne cycloadditions by other groups.[2] CuO NPs may be used as a catalyst for CSe, CTe, and CS bond formation and synthesis of 2-aminobenzothiazole.[3] Molecular responses of mouse macrophages to CuO and Cu2O NPs were studied.

Questions

1–4 of 4 Questions
  1. What is the shape of the individual CuO powder particles ? Is it Spherical?

    1 answer
    1. The morphology of this CuO nanopowder is described by the original manufacturer as "Nearly Spherical".

      Helpful?

  2. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  3. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf

  4. What is the purity of the nanopowder copper catalog N° 544868 ? Thanks in advance

    1 answer
    1. The purity of the copper(II) oxide product is essentially a function of how much copper is present. Product 544868 is listed as 77.0 - 82.6 % on the Certificate of Analysis. Please see the sample Certificate of Analysis: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/certificates/sapfs/PROD/sap/certificate_pdfs/COFA/Q14/544868-BULKMKCR3494.pdf).

The minimum 77.0% copper would be 96.4% pure copper oxide and 82.6% would be 103.4% pure. The sample lot is listed as 78.1% copper, which can be extrapolated to be 97.8% pure copper(II) oxide.
