General description

Fumed silica may be synthesized by high temperature hydrolysis of SiCl4 in O2(N2)/H2 flame. It is amorphous in nature and possesses very high specific area. The micro droplets of amorphous silica fuse into a branch and form a chain like agglomerate.

Application

Fumed silica is used to deplete lipids and hormones in Taqman assays of human hepatoma cells HuH-7 and human liver cell line HepG2.[1] Preparation of epoxidized natural rubber/fumed silica composites have been reported. Interaction of Gemini surfactant C12-s-C122Br with aqueous suspension of fumed silica has been studied. Fumed silica based nanocomposites reinforced with organo clay may be prepared. TiO2/fumed silica porous ceramic material was used to prepare photocatalytic materials.

Has interesting thickening and thixotropic properties, and an enormous external surface area.

Other Notes

Particle sizes are for primary particles, which form branched, chain-like aggregates a few tenths of a micron long.

  1. I am interested in silica fumed, but looking for a micro-size powder, currently do not want to work with nano particles. Does the silica come in micro size? I would like to use this product as a epoxy CTE filler.

    1. The maximum particle size of this product is 325 Mesh or 45 um. Note that product 381276, another fumed silica item, has a particle size range of 120 – 140 Mesh or 105 – 125 um. Please see the link below to review this item:

  2. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.

    1. The particle size range of this material has not been determined. The maxumum particle size is 45 um or 325 Mesh. The calculated particle size is 7 nm, based on the density of 2.2 g/mL and surface area of 395 m2/g (±25 m2/g). However, fumed silica particles are fused together and do form aggregates.
