General description

An analytical reference standard of the major urinary metabolite of nicotine. Not only is cotinine a biomarker for users of nicotine products including cigarettes, cigars, and snuff, but it′s also an alkaloid found in tobacco. Suitable uses for this analytical reference standard include as a starting material in calibrators and controls for GC/MS and LC/MS applications in nicotine testing methods or clinical and diagnostic testing of nicotine biomarkers.

Application

  • Biomarker Analysis in Medical Research: Examination of prolidase as a potential indicator of inflammation associated with cigarette smoking, where (-)-cotinine is a key biomarker, enhances understanding of chronic inflammation and its biochemical pathways in smokers (Yıldırım & Kulaksızoglu, 2024).

  • Comparative Toxicology Studies: Research evaluating blood biomarkers of inflammation in users of heated tobacco products compares these markers, including (-)-cotinine, with non-smoking individuals, offering insights into the inflammatory effects of new tobacco product usage on health (Świątkowska et al., 2024).
