General description

Ginkgo biloba extract is a mixture of biologically active secondary metabolites. The main constituents are bilobalide (BB), ginkgolide A (GA), ginkgolide B (GB) and ginkgolide C (GC). Ginkgo biloba extracts include around 300 compounds, with major constituents being flavonoids and terpene lactones. Terpene lactones make up to 6% of the total extract.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Ginkgo biloba terpene lactone constitutes a major part of Ginkgo Biloba extract (GBE), which is used as a phytomedicine, and is used for multiple disorders including CNS (central nervous system), circulatory, cardiovascular, respiratory and renal diseases. Extracts from the leaves of Gingko plants are thought to have anti-stress, anti-cancer, neuroprotective, cardioprotective and memory enhancing properties. Terpenoid lactones are thought play a complementary role in these effects of GBE.
