General description

Thyroxine or T4 is a thyroid hormone responsible for regulation of the body′s basal metabolic rate and essential for growth, development and heart and nervous system function. Free and total T4 serum levels are measured by LC-MS/MS for determination of hyper- or hypothyroidism as well as for monitoring treatment with synthetic thyroid hormones. This Certified Spiking Solution® is suitable for use in LC-MS/MS testing methods as starting materials in preparation of linearity standards, calibrators, and controls.

Biochem/physiol Actions

L-Thyroxine (T4) and triiodo-L-thyronine (T3) are iodine-containing hormones produced from thyroglobulin in the thyroid follicular cells. The stimulation of metabolic rate and regulation of growth and development by these hormones appear to be due to their effects on DNA transcription and, thus, protein synthesis.

Thyroid hormones play critical roles in the regulation of biological processes, such as growth, metabolism, protein synthesis, and brain development. For a clinical laboratory, fast and reliable measurements of total hormone levels are important for the diagnosis and monitoring of thyroid diseases.
