General description

Glucagon is a peptide hormone secreted by pancreatic alphacells that plays a vital role in maintaining glucose homeostasis. It acts as acounter-regulatory hormone to insulin by stimulating glycogenolysis andgluconeogenesis in the liver, thereby increasing blood glucose levels duringfasting or hypoglycemia. In addition to its role in glucose metabolism, glucagon also influences lipid metabolism and energy balance, making it a keybiomarker in metabolic and endocrine research.

Altered glucagon levels are associated with metabolicdisorders such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, and insulin resistance. Accuratemeasurement of glucagon is essential for understanding pancreatic function, evaluating therapeutic interventions, and studying the hormonal regulation ofenergy metabolism.
