General description

An anti-hyperglycemic agent that acts by lowering the hepatic output of glucose. Does not stimulate insulin secretion, promote weight gain, or cause hypoglycemia. Reported to stimulate AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), leading to the reduction in acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) activity and induction of fatty acid oxidation.
