General description

Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a protein present in a developing fetus. The production of AFP usually stops before birth therefore is only present at very low level in healthy non-pregnant adults. Elevated levels of AFP in serum can be an indication of certain cancers including liver, testicular and overian tumours so it is regularly used as a cancer marker in clinical tests.
