General description

Especially used for purification in membrane research
Triton X-100 is a water soluble, non-ionic surfactant. It exhibits a strong hydrogen bonding with water molecule in temperature dependent manner. It has a wide application area such as in isolation and solubilization of protein, DNA extraction and emulsification.


  • Triton X-100 is one of the most commonly used non-ionic detergents for solubilizing membrane during isolation of membrane-protein complexes
  • Used for native gel electrophoresis
It has been used in several types of buffer solution such as Embryo wash solution, RIPA buffer, NSucrose buffer, and Nuclear extraction buffer (NEB).

Biochem/physiol Actions

Widely used non-ionic surfactant for recovery of membrane components under mild non-denaturing conditions.

Preparation Note

Activator: The enzyme has its maximal activity in presence of SH-reagents
Working concentration: 1 to 5 mM

Store at 2 to 8 °C. (Keep under N2!)
