Prior to use, the resin should be washed and the fines removed. Transfer approximately 100 g of resin to a 500 mL beaker. Add deionized water to cover the resin bed by several inches. Stir or swirl the resin gently for a minute to ensure complete mixing (do not use a stir bar). Allow the material to stand for 15-20 minutes. Decant most of the water and replace it with fresh deionized water. Stir the mixture and allow it to settle for 5-10 minutes. Decant and rinse the resin 3 times with deionized water to remove any residual fines or color. Following this, the resin needs to be regenerated into hydrogen form. Using 1N HCl or H2SO4 (deionized water), slowly add sufficient quantity to cover the resin bed by 1-2 inches and stir or swirl the resin gently for a minute to ensure complete mixing (do not use stir bar). Allow the material to stand for 5-10 minutes. Decant most of the acid and repeat the above twice more with fresh 1N acid. Decant most of the acid and rinse at least 5 times with deionized water [rinse to pH>4.8]. Please note that if methanol or some other aqueous miscible solvent is going to be used in the elution of components from the resin, the above procedure should be repeated in that solvent, to remove residual monomers and color components. The resin must be equilibrated in the sample solvent prior to use.
