General description

Propionaldehyde is a volatile organic compound, which belongs to the class of flavor & fragrance standards for use in the food, beverage and cosmetic industry.[1] These standards are widely used to add taste and/or smell to products without aroma, to mask unpleasant odors and to maintain stability of original flavor.
This substance is listed on the positive list of the EU regulation 10/2011 for plastics intended to come into contact with food.

Application

Propionaldehyde may be used as an analytical reference standard for the quantification of the analyte in:
  • Food products and cosmetics using gas-chromatography with photo ionization detection (GC-PID).[1]
  • Infant formulas using gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID).[2]
  • Household products using gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS).[3]
