General description

Cetyl alcohol is a long chain alcohol, which can find applications as an emulsifying agent, emollient, viscosity increasing agent, foam booster and opacifying agent in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.[1][2]
This substance is listed on the positive list of the EU regulation 10/2011 for plastics intended to come into contact with food.

Application

Cetyl alcohol can undergo reaction with arachidic acid to form cetyl arachidate.[3]
Cetyl alcohol may be used as an excipient for the determination of acyclovir in pharmaceutical preparations[4] and tranexamic acid[5] in cosmetic products by chromatography techniques.
