General description

Nutrient medium is a general basic culture medium for less fastidious microorganisms. Meat extract, yeast extract and peptone provide nitrogen, vitamins, amino acids and carbon for growth. Sodium Chloride ensure osmotic balance. Thus, when adding blood, as supplement the blood cells will not rupture. Addition of 10% different biological fluids such as blood, serum and egg yolk makes it suitable for the cultivation of related fastidious organism. Acc. to Gray et al. the addition of 0.05% potassium tellurite makes the Nutrient medium an excellent enrichment medium for Listeria monocytogenes.

Application

  • Nutrient Agar is used for the routine cultivation of microorganisms not requiring specific nutritional requirements
  • It is also used for the enumeration and enrichment of bacteria
  • Nutrient Agar can be used as a base for preparing special culture media.

Preparation Note

Suspend 28 g in 1 litre of distilled water. Bring to the boil to dissolve completely. Sterilize by autoclaving at 121°C for 15 minutes.

Other Notes

Studies on heterotrophic bacteria in some Argentine soils[1]
We offer two media types: the superior granulated GranuCult® and the cost-efficient powdered NutriSelect® culture media, depending on your needs.
The designations basic, plus, or prime are added to indicate the quality control level, from basic quality control to standard QC plus to prime for full regulatory compliance.

Streptococci- Overview of Detection, Identification, Differentiation and Cultivation Techniques

An article concerning the detection, identification, differentiation, and cultivation of Pseudomonas species.

Some Bacillus species are crucial for advancing our understanding of bacteria, while others can be harmful, acting as spoilage organisms or pathogens. Nevertheless, all these species are significant in biotechnological research.

Questions

1–2 of 2 Questions
  1. How long does prepared agar last in the fridge?

    1 answer
    1. Once prepared, nutrient agar plates typically have a shelf life of about 2 to 4 weeks when stored properly in a refrigerator at 2-8°C. It’s important to keep them in sealed, sterile containers to prevent contamination and dehydration.
