General description

Brain Heart Infusion (BHI), Porcine, is a culture medium commonly used in microbiology for the cultivation of various fastidious, pathogenic microorganisms, including yeasts and molds. The media is nutritious and well-buffered to support the growth of a wide range of microorganisms such as Streptococci, Pneumococci, Meningococci, etc. The media is especially suited for the cultivation of Staphylococci for the plasma coagulase test and setting up blood cultures.BHI is typically prepared using porcine (pig) brain and heart tissues as the source of the raw materials. The enzymatic digestion of porcine brain-heart infusion provides amino acids, nitrogen, carbon, vitamins, and minerals for the growth of organisms. Glucose is the source of carbohydrates, and sodium chloride maintains the osmotic balance of the medium. Disodium phosphate is a buffering agent.

Application

Brain Heart Infusion, porcine, is recommended for the cultivation of fastidious pathogenic microorganisms and is often used for the examination of water, wastewater, meat, and food products. It is used as a culture medium for the growth of Streptococcus pneumonia, Listeria monocytogenes, Leishmania promastigotes, and Clostridium difficile.

Questions

1–2 of 2 Questions
  1. How much powder should be used for 1000 ml?

    1 answer
    1. Product 75917 is an ingredient for BHI infusion broth. Typically, BHI broth acc. ISO 6888 contains Dehydrated Calf Brain Infusion 12.5 g/l, Dehydrated Beef Heart Infusion 5 g/l. Product 75917 is a porcine alternative to these ingredients and can be used at similar concentration, or following appropriate scientific literature.

  2. Can I have the composition of Brain Heart Infusion, Porcine ( Cat No. 75917). It requires a specific mass of each component in 1 liter of medium. Thank you very much.

    1 answer
    1. While Brain Heart Infusion, catalog no. 75917, is typically prepared using porcine brain and heart tissues as the source of the raw materials, which are then enzymatically digested to yield amino acids, nitrogen, carbon, vitamins, and minerals for the growth of organisms, the exact composition of this Brain Heart Infusion is proprietary and cannot be shared.
