General description

Chlorophyll a belongs to the class of porphyrins conjugated with magnesium. It is one of the major forms of oxygenic photosynthetic pigment, chlorophyll, that converts light energy in the blue and red parts of the visible region to chemical energy.

Application

A procedure has been described for harvesting native light-harvesting complex IIb (LHCIIb).
This analytical standard can also be used as follows:
  • Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy-based quantification of chlorophylls (a & b) and pheophytins (a & b) from five brands of green tea samples
  • Development of a high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detection-mass spectrometric (HPLC-DAD-MS) method for the separation and determination of chlorophylls along with their derivatives in Taraxacum formosanum samples
  • Analysis of 14 dietary supplement samples for the quantification of chlorophylls, its degradation products, carotenoids, and pheophytins by a UV-vis spectrophotometric method following their separation by high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC)
  • Evaluation of the effect of pressure, temperature, CO2 flow rate, and a polar co-solvent on the supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) of carotenoids and chlorophylls from microalgae Scenedesmus obliquus for use in food processing
  • Simultaneous measurement of chlorophylls (a & b) and carotenoids (β-carotene and lycopene) in fruit samples of strawberry, apricot, and raspberry by two UV-vis spectrophotometric methods

Questions

1–6 of 6 Questions
  1. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.
For more information, please refer to the Product Dating Information document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/418/501/product-dating-information-06-25-mk.pdf

  2. What is the uncertainty on the HPLC purity of the standard?

    1 answer
    1. This product is not a Certified Reference Material. An uncertainty value is not determined for the reported HPLC results.

      Helpful?

  3. Does the 1 mg product contain exactly 1 mg? What is the margin of error?

    1 answer
    1. For this one milligram pack size, an overfill of up to 0.1 milligrams can be expected due to the difficulty in weighing exactly one milligram without risking an underfill.

      Helpful?

  4. Hi How to prepare Chlorophyll-a stock solutions and what will be the suspension solution. What will be the shelf life of the stock solutions.

    1 answer
    1. Chlorophyll a is soluble in ethanol (10 mg/ml). It is also freely soluble in acetone, benzene, ether, and chloroform, but is not soluble in water. It is recommended to prepare solutions fresh. Chlorophyll a is light sensitive and will degrade quickly upon exposure to light.

      Helpful?

  5. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf

      Helpful?

  6. When the standard has been mixed with ethanol, is the expiration date the same as stated on the product? Provided that the solution is kept in the freezer.

    1 answer
    1. It is recommended to prepare solutions fresh. Chlorophyll A is light-sensitive and will degrade quickly upon exposure to light. Solutions of Chlorophyll A in ethanol will be converted to Chlorophyll B quickly. HPLC analysis has shown a 30 % conversion at 30 minutes.
