General description

Albumin belongs to the four-member albumin superfamily.[1] It is a major protein in the circulating blood.[2] Albumin has a helical structure with three domains that form a heart-like shape.[1]

Application

Bovine Serum Albumin solution has been used:
  • to block protein-coated well plates in enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for immunoreactivity and cross-reactivity studies in the production of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs)[3]
  • to prepare primary antibody solution for peroxidases staining[4]
  • as a supplement for in vitro cultivation of Borrelia strains[4]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Bovine serum albumin (BSA) serves as a protein supplement for cell culture media. BSA acts as a transport carrier for drugs, and it is commonly used to study the protein-drug interactions. Furthermore, it is known for its ability to interact with several aromatic and hydrophobic molecules of the bloodstream.

Questions

  1. Is the BSA cat. A7409 suitable for MACS buffer used for T cell separation? Separated cells would be cultured for around 2 weeks

    1 answer
    1. This product has not been tested for suitability in this application. While it is aseptically prepared, this product is not tested for sterility.

See product A7979 for the sterile, cell culture tested BSA solution that may be more suitable: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/product/sigma/a7979

In addition, see product A9418 to review another cell culture tested product that is cited for use in MACS buffer: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/product/sigma/a9418
