Petroleum ether is a colorless liquid. Extracts of leaves of Litchi chinensis Gaertn. (Sapindaceae) have been prepared in petroleum ether and were evaluated for antiinflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic activities.[1] Pentanes and hexanes are the major constituents of petroleum ether.[2]
Petroleum ether is a mixture of low boiling aliphatic hydrocarbons (mainly hexane and pentane) that is generally used as a laboratory solvent.[3]

Application

Petroleum ether has been used for the analysis of total dietary fiber content by employing a total dietary fibre assay kit. It may be used in the absorption chromatographic purification of organic compounds.[4]
