General description

Drierite (CaSO4) is widely employed as a chemical desiccant in laboratories. Its use is preferred over silica gel for the estimation of CO2. It acts as a drying agent by absorbing moisture in air to form CaSO4 hemihydrate.[1]

Application

Drierite (CaSO4) was used in Drierite/Ascarite column for the purification of air during the estimation of CO2 production by flow-through respirometry system.[2]
it may be employed as drying agent in the following studies:
  • For the removal of water via adsorption during the gas-chromatographic estimation of methanol, ethanol and isopropanol in biological samples.[3]
  • As scrubber for the drying of air.[4]
  • For the drying of nitrile samples during the calorimetric estimation of their enthalpies of vaporization.[5]
  • For the removal of water vapor during the coulometric estimation of carbon dioxide for air pollution monitoring.[6]
