Therapeutic alternative to hormone replacement for osteoporosis of bone mass in both women and men. Estren increased neuronal viability to a similar extent as that observed with 17α- and 17β-estradiol, by a pathway mediated by protein kinase C.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Estren is a synthetic steroid that acts via the androgen receptor. It has been shown to directly activate transcription and increases the proliferation of MCF-7 human breast cancer cells in vitro.

Estrogens and androgens have extensive effects on the immune system, for example they suppress both T and B lymphopoiesis in thymus and bone marrow. Submandibular glands are sexually dimorphic in rodents, resulting in larger granular convoluted tubules in males compared...

We show that sex steroids protect the adult murine skeleton through a mechanism that is distinct from that used to preserve the mass and function of reproductive organs. The classical genotropic actions of sex steroid receptors are dispensable for their...

Estrogen has demonstrated neuroprotective properties, which may underlie the observed preventive effect of estrogen-based hormone therapy (HT) against the development of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease. Deleterious side effects of HT have increased efforts to develop safer compounds that...

The nongenotropic ligand estren (Science 298:843-846, 2002) was evaluated for its transcriptional activity mediated by the human androgen receptor (AR). Our results show that estren can bind, translocate, transactivate, and regulate two known target genes of AR in androgen-responsive cell...
