Application

β-Sitosterol was used to supplement diet of mice to study its effect on body mass accumulation.[1]

Biochem/physiol Actions

β-Sitosterol is a plant sterol that has hypocholesterolemic activity.[2] Only 5% of β-Sitosterol is absorbed by humans. It is hypothesized that the cholesterol-lowering activity is by competing cholesterol for uptake by the cells or by interfering with the esterification of cholesterol.[3] β-Sitosterol is reported to reduce the incidence of colon tumors.[4]

Even though non-Saccharomyces yeasts were regarded as spoilage microorganisms for a long time, their abilities to improve and diversify the aromatic profile of wines are now well recognized. Consequently, their use in combination with S. cerevisiae strains during winemaking has

Non-Saccharomyces yeasts are currently widely used in winemaking to enhance aroma profile diversity among wines. The use of Metschnikowia pulcherrima in sequential inoculation with S. cerevisiae was compared to the inoculation of a pure culture of S. cerevisiae. Moreover, various

Fermentation by microorganisms is a key step in the production of traditional food products such as bread, cheese, beer and wine. In these fermentative ecosystems, microorganisms interact in various ways, namely competition, predation, commensalism and mutualism. Traditional wine fermentation is

Questions

1–3 of 3 Questions
  1. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  2. Hello, How is the purity listed on the certificate determined? Do you calculate the purity based on a high purity b-sitosterol? We determined the purity with our own method and the result is different from the certificate.

    1 answer
    1. The purity value reported on the certificate of analysis (CofA) for each lot of this product is simply the area percent for the major peak on the GC (gas chromatography) trace; the retention time for the major peak lines up with the retention time for beta-sitosterol. The main impurities expected to be present in this product are campesterol and beta-sitostanol, but neither the mass percent nor the area percent values for the peaks corresponding to those compounds are reported on the CofA. Since these compounds could have different response factors on the GC, the area percent values may not match the mass percent.
If a high purity beta-sitosterol (quantitative) certified reference material is required, please consider Product 47133, which is provided as a solution in chloroform: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/product/supelco/47133

  3. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf
