General description

Glucan is a natural polysaccharide. They are carbohydrates forming structural components, which is found in the cell walls of yeast, fungi, seaweed and cereals.

Application

Glucan from baker′s yeast (S. cerevisiae) has been used:
  • for immune stimulation
  • to stimulate mRNA expression of a sigma class glutathione S-transferase (GST) in hemocytes
  • to study its effects in rainbow trout intestinal epithelial cell line (RTgutGC)

Biochem/physiol Actions

Glucan enhances anti-infectious immunity, prevents cancer growth, lowers stress and reduces cholesterol level. It has immunostimulatory property. It maintains blood sugar level and rejuvenates skin.

Questions

1–5 of 5 Questions
  1. I am wondering, once its dissolved in PBS and stored in the fridge, what is the shelf life? Does it lose potency or is it stable?

    1 answer
    1. The solubility of this product is tested in water at 10 mg/mL. Similar rates are expected in PBS. The stability of the stock solutions has not been investigated. However, information available for Glucan from Barley, G6513, indicates that solutions are stable for at least several weeks at room temperature. Note that reconstituting this material in water (and PBS) will yield a turbid solution. Wetting the powder using 95% ethanol, then adding water and heating to 120°C, while vigorously stirring, will yield a much more clear solution.

  2. What is the MW of this product, was the chain length standardized or not?

    1 answer
    1. According to Biochem. J., vol. 135, 31-36 (1973), Glucan consists of predominantly beta 1,3-linkages, with some beta 1,6-linkage as crosslinking, with a degree of polymerization of 1500. And 1500 times the monomeric molecular weight of 162 (180 for glucose minus 18 for water) equals approximately 240,000 grams per mole. This value has not been confirmed for this product in our laboratories.

  3. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  4. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf

  5. What is the solubility of the product?

    1 answer
    1. The solubility of this product can be found on the lot specific Certificate of Analysis. When dissolved in water at a concentration of 9.80 - 10.20 mg/mL, the product forms a turbid solution with visible insoluble particulates, and the solution color ranges from colorless to light yellow.
