General description

Glucose is the energy currency essential for physiological processes in the living cells. It serves as a precursor for glycoproteins, glycolipids and glycosaminoglycans.[1]

Application

D-(+)-Glucose solution has been used as a medium supplement:
  • in Dulbecco′s Modified Eagle Medium (DMEM) for culturing Flp-In  293 cells[2]
  • in dissection medium for coronal slices from rat brain[3]
  • in neurobasal medium for culturing hippocampi cells[4]

Provides the primary energy source for cell metabolism.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Glucose is a crucial component for the growth and maintenance of mammalian cells in in vitro conditions and is essential for productivity and quality.[5] Its high metabolic turnover favors osteoclast differentiation.[1] The levels of glucose modulate the migration and growth of tumor cells. HeLa cells display high mobility at low glucose levels.[6]
