General description

L3MBTL2 (lethal (3) malignant brain tumor-like 2) is a human homolog of Sfmbt protein of Drosophila. It is one of the four human proteins containing four MBT (malignant brain tumor) repeats. This protein is composed of 705 amino acids, and its N-terminal contains an atypical zinc finger. It is a transcriptional repressor protein, which forms a component of the polycomb repressive complex 1.6 (PRC1.6).

Biochem/physiol Actions

Lethal (3) malignant brain tumor-like 2 protein is a protein encoded by the L3MBTL2 gene in humans. It consists of an an α-helix preceded by a β-hairpin. The zinc ligands are situated in the β-hairpin and at the N-terminus of the α-helix. This arrangement is typical of the treble clef class of zinc fingers. The MBT domain of L3MBTL2 specifically interacts with the histone deacetylase domain of histone deacetylase 3 (HDAC3).
