General description

Piezo type mechanosensitive ion channel component 1 (PIEZO1), also known as fam38a, is encoded by the gene mapped to human chromosome 16q24.3. The protein contains 30 transmembrane domains and is expressed in variety of tissues, such as skin, kidney, lung and colon.

Application

Biochem/physiol Actions

Piezo type mechanosensitive ion channel component 1 (PIEZO1) facilitates fluid shear stress response of the vascular endothelium. It is also essential for maintaining vascular structure and embryonic development. Piezo1 is involved in the lineage choice of stem cell to neuron/astrocyte differentiation. In addition, it also aids in sensing nanoroughness of the environment. Piezo1 plays a vital role in maintaining erythrocyte volume homeostasis. Aberrations in the expression of the gene lead to swelling/lysis of red blood cells and consequent anemia. Mutation in the gene is associated with the development of hereditary xerocytosis.
