Application

6α-Methylprednisolone has been used:
  • to stimulate RPMI 8226.1 cells in order to govern the expression of human interleukin-10 (IL-10) gene[1]
  • to induce depletion of CD14+ CD16+ monocytes[2]
  • to study its effect on behavioral and sensory afferent hypersensitivity[3]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Methylprednisolone is a glucocorticoid having anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive actions.[4] It is useful in treating skin diseases, allergies, multiple sclerosis, asthma, rheumatic disorders, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, croup and cancer.[5]

  1. What solvents can be used for Methylprednisolone?

    1. Sigma tests the solublity of Methylprednisolone at 50 mg/ml in chloroform:methanol (1:1) yielding a clear, colorless to faint yellow solution. This product is practically insoluble in water, soluble 1 in 100 of dehydrated ethanol (10 mg/ml), slightly soluble in chloroform and ether; sparingly soluble in dioxan and methanol.  It has been reported that this product is soluble in DMSO at a concentration of 100 mM. An NMR has been run using DMSO-d6 suggesting this product is soluble at 5-10 mg/ml in DMSO.
