General description

Methyl Blue is a triaminotriphenylmethane dye,[1] widely used in paper, textile and leather production.[2]

Application

Methyl Blue has been used:
  • to stain leaf disks for callose visualization within the cells[3]
  • to incubate cells for 4′,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI)/septa staining[4]
  • as a marker for β-(1-3)-d-glucans or acidic phloroglucinol for the detection of callose and lignin[5]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Methyl Blue is considered as a xenobiotic compound[2] and has antiseptic property.[1] It is useful in polychrome staining.[1][6] Methyl blue is mostly used for staining samples in histology and microbiology. It is also useful as a model to reveal the role of catalyst in light induced degradation of dyes.[1]
