General description

Paraplast® is a paraffin–polyisobutylene mixture for tissue embedding and infiltration. It is a refined combination of highly purified paraffin with plastic polymers. It produces minimal tissue compression and wrinkle-free sections and cuts to 4 μm thickness with excellent ribbon continuity.

Application

Paraplast® has been used for tissue embedding and in the following applications:
  • to screen major groups of vertebrates for the presence of cardiac smooth muscle and its phylogenetic distribution in terrestrial and aquatic turtles[1]
  • to study the relationship between membrane impedance and dendrite length of hippocampal neurons[2]
  • to compare the regenerative properties of human stem cells of the apical papilla as an alternative to other dental stem cells[3]

Features and Benefits

  • Minimal tissue compression.
  • Produces wrinkle-free sections.
  • Excellent ribbon continuity.

Other Notes

Double filtered paraffin wax in pellet form.

Questions

1–2 of 2 Questions
  1. Is it suitable to use it to cut tissues with implants that have been embedded in Paraplast, Paraplast Xtra, or Paraplast Plus?

    1 answer
    1. Paraplast is commonly used to cut soft tissue to 4 or 5 microns, while Paraplast Xtra can cut down to 2 microns. Paraplast Plus is capable of cutting down to 1 micron, provided the user is skilled; otherwise, slightly thicker sections can be obtained.

      Helpful?

  2. At what temeperature or temperaturintervall the Paraplast is melting?

    1 answer
    1. The Melting point/range is 56-57°C (133-135°F)
