Application

For use in cell culture applications for the study of prostaglandin regulated cell signaling and gene regulation.
Prostaglandin E1 has been used in maintaining mice proximal tubule,[1] and NRK-52E, a rat renal epithelial cell line.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Prostaglandins mediate vasodilation and vasoconstriction, the E series of prostaglandin is a highly effective vasodilator. It is known to efficiently cause erythema. Prostaglandin E1 is considered as a potent pyretic factor, and acts through cerebral ventricles. Prostaglandin E1 is useful to prolong cardiovascular function in new born suffering from ductus-dependant congenital heart disease until surgery.

Drugs that act more promiscuously provide fewer routes for the emergence of resistant mutants. This benefit, however, often comes at the cost of serious off-target and dose-limiting toxicities. The classic example is the antifungal amphotericin B (AmB), which has evaded
