continuous insect cell line propagation

General description

Shields and Sang M3 insect medium can support the rapid growth of both primary and established cultures of Drosophila melanogaster cells. Insect tissue culture media have been formulated to mimic the main properties of the hemolymph of specific insects.

Application

Developed for the culture of Drosophila cell lines.
Shields and Sang M3 Insect Medium has been used:
  • for the dissection of Drosophila larvae to study the changes in the translational activity of larval wing imaginal disc cells[1]
  • to incubate Drosophila bodies for surface sensing of translation (SUnSET) assay[2]
  • to culture Drosophila cells for transfection studies[3]

Spermatogenesis in many species including Drosophila melanogaster is accompanied by major reorganisation of chromatin in post-meiotic stages, involving a nearly genome-wide displacement of histones by protamines, Mst77F and Protamine-like 99C. A proposed prerequisite for the histone-to-protamine transition is massive histone
