General description
Rifampicin is used to treat Tuberculosis and Tuberculosis-related mycobacterial infections.[1] Rifampicin is widely used as an antipruritic agent in the autoimmune cholestatic liver disease, and primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC).[2] Rifampicin was also found active by inhibiting Tau Oligomer Propagation in Alzheimer’s disease.[3] In addition, Rifampicin is used as a selection agent for agrobacterium mediated plant transformation.[4]
We are committed to bringing you Greener Alternative Products. This product is a Design for Sustainability (DfS) developed product, which belongs to one of the four categories of greener alternatives. Click here to view its DfS scorecard.
Application
Rifampicin is used to treat Tuberculosis and Tuberculosis-related mycobacterial infections. It is widely used as an antipruritic agent in the autoimmune cholestatic liver disease, primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC). It has been shown to cause hepatitis.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Rifampicin inhibits the assembly of DNA and protein into mature virus particles. It inhibits initiation of RNA synthesis by binding to β-subunit of RNA polymerase, which results in cell death.
Mode of Action: Inhibits initiation of RNA synthesis by binding to β-subunit of RNA polymerase. Inhibits the assembly of DNA and protein into mature virus particles.

The cell-to-cell transmission of tau aggregates is considered a mechanism underlying the intracerebral spreading of tau pathology in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other tauopathies. Recent studies suggest that tau oligomers, rather than fibrils, participate in this process. We previously showed
