Biochem/physiol Actions

Interleukin-2 is an immunomodulatory factor produced by certain subsets of T lymphocytes. This lymphokine promotes long term growth of activated T cells and related cell types. Interleukin-2 plays a role in the activation and proliferation of NK cells, induces γ-interferon and B cell growth factor secretion, and modulates the expression of the IL-2 receptor.

Unit Definition

One unit is the amount required to induce half-maximal incorporation of 3H-thymidine into IL-2-dependent cytolytic T cell lymphocytes.

Physical form

Lyophilized from a 0.2 μm filtered solution in phosphate buffered saline containing 1 mg bovine serum albumin

Preparation Note

Purified from a conditioned medium of a rat splenocyte culture stimulated by concanavalin A.

We have previously shown that inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) was up-regulated in natural killer (NK) cells when AK-5 tumour cells were transplanted subcutaneously into syngeneic Wistar rats. This study was designed to investigate the role of interleukin (IL)-2 during
