General description

Packed column made up of stainless steel are basically employed when higher carrier gas flow rates are employed as they can sustain elevated pressure. Stainless steel columns are usually washed with dilute hydrochloric acid, then with water followed by methanol, acetone, methylene dichloride and n-hexane in order to remove any corrosion products and traces of lubricating agents.
An economical metal column should be used for less demanding applications where the inertness of glass is not required. This column is of a general configuration, and can be carefully bent to fit most instruments.

Application

Carboxen 1000 packed in a stainless steel column maybe used in the anaerobic chamber for conductance of research with methanogenic archaea.

Questions

  1. Could you elaborate on the process of bending the column to accommodate different instruments for the product Metal Packed GC Column (General Configuration), SKU 12390-U?

    1 answer
    1. Stainless steel 1/8" GC columns can be adjusted to fit a particular instrument, provided that the tubing is not kinked or bent excessively. If reshaping is necessary, it should be done slowly and carefully, especially for columns packed with carbon-based material, like Carboxen-1000, or any column containing carbon-based material that may fracture if the tubing is bent too far. Fractured packing, regardless of type, can lead to active sites that may adsorb specific types of compounds.
