Polymers continuously shrink with heat due to loss of residual monomer. If conditioned too harshly, rapid loss of residual monomer results in gaps through the column. By mildly conditioning the polymer packing, it helps to decrease the number and size of voids due to shrinkage of the polymer. Below is a suggested conditioning procedure for polymer packed columns. Ramp rate is not important compared to the temperature for the analysis. Flow rate of 5-20 deg C/minute can be use if desired, once the column has been conditioned. 120 deg C for 4 hours 160 deg C for 4 hours 180 deg C for 4 hours 200 deg C for 4 hours 220 deg C for 4 hours @ 60 mL/minute.
