General description

An economical metal column should be used for less demanding applications where the inertness of glass is not required. This column is of a general configuration, and can be carefully bent to fit most instruments.
Packed column made up of stainless steel are basically used when higher carrier gas flow rates are employed as they can sustain elevated pressure. Stainless steel columns are usually washed with dilute hydrochloric acid, then with water followed by methanol, acetone, methylene dichloride and n-hexane in order to remove any corrosion products and traces of lubricating agents.

Application

Porapak Q packed in a stainless steel gas chromatographic column maybe used for the oxidation reduction experiments in order to design the appropriate surface sites for ruthenium-ceria catalysts supported on graphite by controlled preparation method.

  1. How do I properly condition Product No. 13979-U, SS Column 10ft General Coil 80/100 Porapak Q?

    1. Polymers continuously shrink with heat due to loss of residual monomer. If conditioned too harshly, rapid loss of residual monomer results in gaps through the column.  By mildly conditioning the polymer packing, it helps to decrease the number and size of voids due to shrinkage of the polymer.   Below is a suggested conditioning procedure for polymer packed columns.  Ramp rate is not important compared to the temperature for the analysis.  Flow rate of 5-20 deg C/minute can be use if desired, once the column has been conditioned.  120 deg C for 4 hours  160 deg C for 4 hours  180 deg C for 4 hours  200 deg C for 4 hours  220 deg C for 4 hours  @ 60 mL/minute.
