Lutein a non-provitamin A yellowish carotenoid, is commonly found in eggs, fruits, vegetables, vegetable oils and grains. One of the most important beneficial effects of lutein is the prevention of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts .

Application

Lutein may be used as an analytical reference standard for the quantification of the analyte in chicken liver and vegetables/vegetable oils using high-performance liquid chromatography.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Dietary carotenoid with no vitamin A potency. Increases macular pigment concentration in the eye and may improve visual function.
