Tetrahydrofuran (THF) is a heterocyclic compound (cyclic ether), widely used as a solvent in organic synthesis. THF is colorless, has low viscosity, and exhibits a relatively high dielectric constant, enabling it to dissolve a wide range of polar and nonpolar compounds. It is particularly effective in dissolving polar compounds including inorganic salts, metal complexes, and some polymers.
THF is also used as a solvent in Grignard reactions for the synthesis of organometallic compounds. Additionally, it serves as a reaction medium for polymerization reactions, specifically for the polymerization of vinyl polymers. In chromatography, THF is utilized for the preparation of solutions used in spectroscopy and other analytical techniques.
Tetrahydrofuran is relatively stable under normal conditions. However, during long-term storage, it has the potential to form organic peroxides. To mitigate this, THF can be stabilized by adding butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). BHT eliminates the free radicals required for peroxide formation.
Anhydrous Tetrahydrofuran
Anhydrous tetrahydrofuran is used as a solvent in Grignard reactions to ensure the absence of water, which can react with the Grignard reagent and disrupt the reaction. It is also used as a solvent in electrochemical applications, such as battery research or electrodeposition.
Tetrahydrofuran in High-performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)
Tetrahydrofuran exhibits a higher elution capacity compared to other commonly used HPLC solvents like methanol or acetonitrile. This characteristic can be beneficial when separating compounds with similar polarities or when a stronger elution is required.
Deuterated Tetrahydrofuran (Tetrahydrofuran-d8)
THF-d8 is used as a deuterated solvent or as a reference standard in proton (1H) and carbon-13 (13C) NMR spectroscopy.
Tetrahydrofuran in Gas Chromatography
THF is a polar aprotic solvent with the ability to dissolve a wide range of organic compounds. It is particularly effective in dissolving polar analytes, making it suitable for the analysis of compounds with moderate to high polarity in gas chromatography (GC).
Omnisolv® Tetrahydrofuran
Omnisolv® tetrahydrofuran is a non-UV tetrahydrofuran used in various analytical techniques, including HPLC, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, and gas chromatography.
Emprove ® Tetrahydrofuran
Tetrahydrofuran is used as a solvent in pharmaceutical production for Active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) processing and polymorph screening.
