General description

Silver nitrate stains substance with brown-black color. It is unstable at a temperature >100°C and loses its chromatographic properties.

Application

Silver nitrate has been used:
  • in the synthesis of colloidal silver nanoparticles
  • in von Kossa staining of differentiated osteogenically driven human mesenchymal stem cells, osteoblasts and mineralized nodules
  • in the approach of developing a new myelin silver stain

Biochem/physiol Actions

Silver nitrate solution is originally used as an antiseptic agent and to treat burn wounds. Ionic form of silver possesses antibacterial properties. Treatment with hypotonic silver nitrate solution might result in hyponatremia, an electrolyte abnormality.
