Volatiles by GC-MS or GC

Volatile pollutants must first be purged out of the sample, or off the collection media, prior to analysis. Purging analytes from water or solid samples is accomplished using the purge and trap technique. Air samples may require a technique other than purge and trap, such as the thermal desorption technique. Both of these techniques can be coupled directly to a GC-MS, or to a GC with a non-MS detector, for analysis. This allows the purge and analysis steps to be performed sequentially through a combined automated process. Example US EPA methods include 502.2, 524.2, 601, 602, 624, 8021, 8260, OLM04.3, TO-1, TO-2, TO-14, TO-15, and TO-17.
