Coacervation and phase separation were first reported in salt-free catanionic surfactant aqueous systems based on lauric acid (LA) and dodecyltrimethylammonium hydroxide (DTAOH), using hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) as a coacervate-inducing agent.
