Components

15g/L Agar
10g/L Tryptone
10g/L NaCl
5g/L Yeast Extract
10μg/ml tetracycline

Application

Suitable for selective cultivation of E. coli strains that contain plasmids conferring tetracycline resistance. The bacteria can be used for DNA plasmid production or production of recombinant proteins.

Features and Benefits

Miller’s LB Agar plates provide:
• Convenient, ready-to-use 10cm format
• Standard formulation plus antibiotic

General description

Miller’s LB is a highly-referenced microbial growth medium used for the cultivation of E. coli. This nutrient-rich microbial broth contains peptides, amino acids, water-soluble vitamins, and carbohydrates in a low-salt formulation. The addition of agar provides a solid medium for microbial growth.

Other Notes

The plates must be used within two months of the manufacture date to ensure the antibiotics are fully active. The product may be shipped up until its expiration date but is generally shipped 2-4 weeks before expiration.

What is the Department of Transportation shipping information for this product?
Transportation information can be found in Section 14 of the product's (M)SDS.To access the shipping information for this material, use the link on the product detail page for the product.
Why do the LB-agar plates with antibiotics have such a short expiration date?
The antibiotics in the LB-agar platesare not stable. The antibiotic degrades over time, making it ineffective at selecting transformed bacteria grown on the plate.Because of this, we recommend the plates are used as soon as possible once they are received. For labs with low use, the plates may expire quickly, so they may benefit from pouring their own plates using the LB - Miller powder with agar formulation (L3147).

Transforming E. coli with Engineered Plasmid

Inoue and colleagues developed this method in 1990. It works well for many strains commonly used in cloning. The original method calls for growing the overnight E. coli cultures at 18°C. We find that...
