Description

General description

Xanthine is a purine that is produced from several different precursors in the purine metabolic pathway:
• deamination of guanine by guanine deaminase
• conversion of hypoxanthine by xanthine oxidoreductase
Xanthine is a precursor metabolite to uric acid in purine metabolism. Xanthine has been noted as a biomarker of conditions such as gout.
