Description

General description

Albumin is the most abundant plasma protein in humans. High levels of albumin are associated with dehydration. Albumin turnover is seen in infants with iron deficiency anemia. Serum albumin is a reliable prognostic indicator for morbidity and mortality and liver disease. Oxidative damage of albumin is associated with advanced liver disease.

Application

Bovine Serum Albumin has been used in luminescence assays.

Packaging

10, 50, 100, 500 g in poly bottle

Biochem/physiol Actions

Certain conformational and primary-sequence epitopes of BSA are suspected allergens in human beef and milk allergies.

Preparation Note

Prepared using heat shock fractionation

Serum albumin may be referred to as Fraction V. This naming convention is taken from the original Cohn method of fractionating serum proteins using cold ethanol precipitation. Serum albumin was found in the fifth ethanol fraction using Cohn′s method. Since then, the term "Fraction V" has been used by some to describe serum albumin regardless of the method of preparation. Others have used this term to describe serum albumin purified by ethanol fractionation methods that have been highly modified since the original Cohn method was described. Sigma-Aldrich manufactures and distributes serum albumins purified from a variety of primary methods including the true Cohn fractionation method, modified ethanol fractionation methods, heat shock and chromatography. Additional purification steps may include crystallization or charcoal filtration.

Frequently Asked Questions

IsProduct A3059, Albumin from bovine serum (BSA), suitable for use in ELISA?
We have not tested A3059 for specific use in ELISA. However, A3059 is considered to be essentially gamma-globulin free, which makes this more potentially useful in ELISA, by reducing a potential source of background.
IsProduct A3059, Albumin from bovine serum (BSA), suitable for use as a blocking agent in immunoblotting?
We have not tested A3059 for specific use in immunoblotting as a blocking agent, in quality control. However, A3059 is considered to be essentially gamma-globulin free, which makes this more potentially useful in blotting experiments, by reducing a potential source of background. The Technical Bulletin states that "Globulin free albumins are suitable for use in applications where no other proteins should be present".
What is the fatty acid content of Product A3059, Albumin from bovine serum (BSA)? Can it be considered fatty acid free?
The fatty acid content of A3059 is not tested in quality control, and it is not reported on our Certificate of Analysis. We would not refer to this product as "fatty acid free".
IsProduct A3059, Albumin from bovine serum (BSA), endotoxin-free?
We have not tested A3059 for endotoxin content. Endotoxin-tested BSA products would include A4919, A9306, A9430, A2934, A9306, A9543, or A3675.
IsProduct A3059, Albumin from bovine serum (BSA), acetylated to inactivate nucleases?
A3059 is not acetylated. We do not test for the presence of nucleases. Acetylated BSA products would be B2518 or B8894.
Which document(s) contains shelf-life or expiration date information for a given product?
If available for a given product, the recommended re-test date or the expiration date can be found on the Certificate of Analysis.
How do I get lot-specific information or a Certificate of Analysis?
The lot specific COA document can be found by entering the lot number above under the "Documents" section.
