Biochem/physiol Actions

CAMKK1 (Calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase kinase 1) is responsible for phosphorylation of Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinases (CAMKs), CAMK1 and CAMK4. In muscle cells, CAMKK1 is involved in the activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) via adiponectin by stimulating Ca2+ release from intracellular stores. Absence of CAMKK1 attenuates phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate (PMA)-dependent IL (Interleukin)-10 production and enhnaces tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα). These changes cause shift from type-II to classical monocyte activation. CAMKK1 results in AKT (RAC-γ serine/threonine-protein kinase) activation, which inhibits IL-1β-induced nuclear factor-κB (NFκB) activation.
