Biochem/physiol Actions

CD69 type II transmembrane glycoprotein is a early activation antigen of T and B lymphocytes which is found constitutively on thymocytes and platelets. It has C-type lectin-like fold, including two α-helical regions found in Ly49A and mannose-binding protein (MBP). CD69 belongs to the family of receptors that helps to modulate immune response. The genes of this receptors are associated with the natural killer (NK) gene and the extracellular portion of these receptors represent a subfamily of C-type lectin-like domains (CTLDs). It is referred as NK-cell domains (NKDs) and are divergent from true C-type lectins. Expression of CD69 is initiated by the activation of T lymphocytes at the cell surface. It acts as a signal-transducing receptor involved in cellular activation including proliferation and induction of specific genes.
