General description

Eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4E-binding protein 2 (PHASII) is a protein encoded by the EIF4EBP2 gene in humans. Two eukaryotic initiation factor-4E binding proteins (4E-BP1 and 4E-BP2) were found to bind specifically to eIF4E and inhibit its function. 4E-BP2 gene (20kb) exhibits an identical genomic organization to that of 4E-BP1 and is localized to chromosomes 10q21-q22. It is found abundantly in liver and kidney.

Biochem/physiol Actions

The expression of 4E-BP2 acts as a specific repressor of eIF4E function. Its expression is high in double-positive (DP) cells and decreases during maturation, which increases the possibility of a role for 4E-BP2 in repressing eIF4E phosphorylation. 4E-BP2 plays an important role in regulating translation initiation. Its down-regulation is associated with granulocytic maturation and the post-transcriptional regulation is associated with the early action of retinoic acid (RA).
