Description

General description

SLC18B1 (solute carrier family 18 member B1) belongs to SLC18 transporter family. It encodes VPAT (vesicular polyamine transporter). It is mostly expressed in the hippocampus and is associated with vesicles in astrocytes. It is widely expressed in several organs, including the lung, placenta, adrenal gland, liver, and brain.

Biochem/physiol Actions

SLC18B1 (solute carrier family 18 member B1) is responsible for the transport of spermine and spermidine by exchanging H+. Silencing of SLC18B1 gene decreases SLC18B1 protein as well as spermine/spermidine contents in astrocytes. It is also responsible for the vesicular storage of polyamines.
