MTT Formazan has been used to measure cell viability.

1 g in glass bottle

Biochem/physiol Actions

MTT method is suitable to check cell viability during apoptosis. Live cells reduce MTT (yellow colored) to formazan MTT (dark blue product). The presence of formazan MTT can be measured spectrophotometrically at 570nm.

How do I get lot-specific information or a Certificate of Analysis?
The lot specific COA document can be found by entering the lot number above under the "Documents" section.
Can MTT Formazan, Product M2003, be used in cell viability assays?
No.MTT or thiazolyl blue tetrazolium is used to determine the number of viable cells in well-cultures. Consider use of kit CGD1 or product M5655.
What is the solubility of MTT Formazan, Product M2003, in water or PBS?
This product is not soluble in either water or PBS.Sigma Aldrich tests product at 1mg/mL in acetone. A 1:1 DMSO:acidified isopropanol also works well for dissolving the formazan.
Can MTT Formazan, Product M2003, be used to measure dehydrogenases?
No. MTT is converted by active mitochondrial dehydrogenases of living cells to MTT Formazan. Consider use of product M2128 or M5655.
What is the proper wavelength for measuring MTT Formazan, Product M2003?
We recommend detection at 570 nm, with background subtraction at 630-690 nm in acidified isopropanol.
