General description

GC (Group-specific component, vitamin D binding protein) is an α2-globulin, multifunctional serum protein belonging to the albumin gene family. It is expressed in the plasma. The gene is localized to chromosome 4q11-q22 region. It is secreted from the liver with a molar mass of 55kDa.

Physical form

Supplied at 0.5 mg/mL in 20mM Tris (pH 7.3) and 150mM NaCl with 0.02% sodium azide and 0.5% bovine serum albumin.

Anti-GC antibody produced in goat is suitable for indirect ELISA and western blot analysis.

Biochem/physiol Actions

GC (Group-specific component) is major vitamin D binding protein in plasma. It is associated with several physiological functions including vitamin D transport and storage, accumulation of extracellular G-actin, increase in the chemotactic activity of C5a for neutrophils in inflammation and macrophage activation. It also exerts sugar moiety controlled pleiotropic effects during macrophage activation, antiangiogenic activity and antitumor activity.
