synthetic peptide corresponding to amino acids 49-62 of human Importin 5 conjugated to KLH. The corresponding sequence differs by one amino acid in mouse and rat Importin 5.

General description

Importin 5 (IPO5) is encoded by the gene mapped to human chromosome 13q32.2. The encoded protein belongs to the importin β family. It is primarily expressed in cytoplasm, specifically in the nuclear pore complex.

Physical form

Solution in 0.01 M phosphate buffered saline, pH 7.4, containing 15 mM sodium azide.

Anti-Importin 5 (N-terminal) antibody produced in rabbit has been used in western blotting.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Importin 5 (IPO5) in association with nucleoside triphosphates and the small GTP binding protein Ran, facilitates migration of nuclear localization signal (NLS)-containing cargo from cytoplasm to nucleus. IPO5 also plays a vital role in apolipoprotein A-1 excretion and also helps in transport of lipids from peripheral tissues via reverse cholesterol transport pathway. Additionally, the encoded protein facilitates transport of ribosomal proteins and core histones into the nucleus. Mutation in the gene is associated with the development of schizophrenia.
